Beware of Medicare Open Enrollmnet Scams
MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT SCAMS
Open Enrollment for Medicare plans ends December 7th putting time stresses on people wishing to make changes to their medical coverage.
Scammers and hackers are aware of this and already taking full advantage. My inbox is littered with ads informing me of the open enrollment period and how my coverage is about to end. Some say my enrollment is ready for a one-click processing and others have links to Asian companies ready to process my information.
Many of these emails look professional and legitimate. They are meant to prey on the elderly who may feel rushed to make a decision or may appreciate the offers of help to make the process easier and less confusing. A click on any link in these can take you to an infected website which loads malware onto your computer, or worse, takes to you phony login forms where hackers steal your personal information.
The best way to avoid confusion about these kinds of scams is to follow one simple rule.
IF YOU DID NOT INITIATE CONTACT, DO NOT CLICK LINKS AND DO NOT GIVE INFORMATION.
No reputable company will ask for personal information via email. Only you know who you trust. If you believe an email MAY be legitimate, do not respond to the email. Use the contact information you already have or find the information yourself. Ask your children or neighbors for help. If you understand the process, start a conversation at church, help your friends, let’s watch out for each other.
